Photo: 2000 Disco 2 RefreshA neglected 2000 Land Rover Discovery 2 revived and mildly lifted
Betteron2wheels bought a 2000 Discovery 2 that had sat parked since a PO noticed a tick, then worked through brake, cooling, sunroof leak and driveline issues over several visits. The thread also covers a budget suspension lift using recycled Land Cruiser springs and parts scavenged from junkyard Discoveries and a P38 Range Rover.

How it was done
Starting condition
The Discovery had been parked since developing a tick and had sat with roof leaks causing mildew and condensation inside. After getting it running, a drive to the owner's parents' garage revealed a ruptured rear brake line and a loud front end tick, prompting a full inspection and repair list.
Brakes and driveline
The owner traced the brake failure to a corroded rear line near the driver's side rear axle and fabricated a replacement from nickel copper pipe after the OEM rigid line proved too stiff to route. The front driveshaft u-joint, found worn out, was identified as the source of the tick.
Leaks and cooling system
Both factory sunroofs were found to be the source of water leaks, with failed silicone seals and early rust. They were replaced with a leak-free pair sourced from a junkyard Discovery, tested with a hose. The cooling system was refreshed with a new water pump, hoses, thermostat, bleeder, belt and tensioner.
Junkyard parts and lift
Visiting a wrecking yard with two Discoveries, the owner picked up a carpet set, seats, a CDL shifter with SLABS, and sourced tyres and wheels off a P38 Range Rover. Using leftover Toyota Land Cruiser coil springs from a previous project, a front and rear lift was installed, requiring spring compressors and disconnecting brake line and sway bar brackets to clear the swap.
Progress so far
By the latest update the car had working brakes, a sealed roof, refreshed cooling system and a completed spring lift with new tyres. The owner still planned to bed-line the headliner but had not yet applied it.
A summary in our own words. The full account, with all its detail, is in the original write-up: read it at 2000 Disco 2 Refresh ↗
Worth knowing
- Removing the rear cross member would make fitting longer replacement coil springs easier
- Line up the lower spring seat bolt holes before releasing the spring to avoid struggling to start the bolts
- Have a variety of socket extensions on hand for the spring swap
- Using ratchet straps and a pry bar to compress springs is risky and better done with proper spring compressors
