Timmeh documents ongoing cosmetic and mechanical modifications to his 1990 Eunos Roadster, from wheels and lighting to a welded roll bar and track outings. How it was done
Starting condition
Timmeh bought the Eunos Roadster in mid 2012 with around 138,000 km and little service history. Mechanically it was sound, and the previous owner had already fitted a custom exhaust and king springs.
Early styling changes
Early work was mostly cosmetic: stickers, a repainted petrol cap, blacked-out badges, halo headlights, and a rear spoiler, along with a set of mesh wheels and a front lip.
Roll bar and track use
A roll bar was fabricated by a friend, powder coated, and fitted with a fire extinguisher mount. The car was later taken to track days, including skid pan sessions, and a racing harness was added for better restraint.
Wheel and trim changes
Wheels were swapped several times, including 15x8 Rota GR!D and later Mazdaspeed MS01R, alongside a carbon fibre antenna, window tint on indicators and reflectors, and new wiper arms.
Defect and refocus
The car failed a roadworthy inspection over wheel fitment and an unapproved roll cage, leading to roughly $1000 in suspension bushing and boot replacements. Timmeh then sold his wheels, bought less conspicuous ones, and began planning a respray and correct wheel fitment.
A summary in our own words. The full account, with all its detail, is in the original write-up: read it at Timmeh's Road Legal Go kart ↗
Worth knowing
- A roadworthy inspection can require significant suspension bush and boot replacement even on a mechanically sound car
- Wheels protruding past the guards can draw a defect notice even if tyre tread is within the guards
- An unapproved roll cage can fail inspection and needs mod-plating
