Verwah's turbocharged NC Miata, built by Dynotronics for street and track

Verwah had his NC Miata sent out to Dynotronics (built by Joe) for a full turbo engine build, which took over nine months longer than expected. Years later the owner documented tearing the car down again for a fresh long block, fuel system upgrade, and front-end cooling and aero work. The thread tracks both the original professional build and later owner-performed maintenance and upgrades.

How it was done

Professional turbo build

The owner sent the NC Miata to Dynotronics (built by Joe) for a turbocharged 2.5L engine build with forged internals, a Fab9 turbo kit using a Borg Warner EFR 6758, fabricated intake manifold, new fuel system, suspension and wheel/tyre upgrades, and interior and cosmetic changes. The project took over nine months, far longer than planned, before the car was finished and shipped back.

Break-in and first results

After delivery the owner ran an easy break-in tune at low boost on 91 octane, then began putting on miles. A dyno session on a dynapack showed 350 whp at 7000 rpm and 320 ft-lb at 3500 rpm at about 11 psi, with plans to raise boost after the break-in period.

Later teardown and fresh long block

Years later the owner pulled the engine again, dressed a new long block with new sensors and gasket maker, and installed Dynotronics' thermostatic oil filter mount with provisions for a turbo feed line, pressure sender and cooler circuit. The valve cover was hydro dipped in a digital camo pattern by a local high school auto shop using TWN Industries film.

Fuel system and reassembly

The owner upgraded to a return-style fuel system in anticipation of running E85, sourced locally in Wisconsin. The engine and transmission were reinstalled as a unit, with care taken routing wiring, coolant lines and the steering shaft, and a hood strut added after deleting a prop rod that rubbed the intake tube.

Front end cooling and aero work

Fitting an LRB undertray, splitter brackets and an oil cooler together required trimming the tray and drilling extra holes for cooling flow since the stock cutout pattern conflicted with the splitter mounts. A loud aftermarket horn was also mounted in an unconventional spot behind the bumper due to space constraints.

Brakes acknowledged as a limitation

In response to a comment that stock brakes were not ideal for a turbo build, the owner confirmed the factory brakes and fluid were simply refreshed to OEM+ spec for now, with a balanced big brake kit planned for later once boost is increased.

A summary in our own words. The full account, with all its detail, is in the original write-up: read it at Street/track NC build ↗

Worth knowing

  • Wiring and routing details done carefully during a self-install exceed what a shop swap typically achieves
  • Mounting multiple aftermarket front-end kits together requires checking for interference between undertray, splitter and oil cooler before installation
  • A drain hole should be added when inverting a horn to prevent water collection
