Owner keeps a 2000 Discovery 2 "Penny" running with small fixes and swaps

This is a forum build thread by owner YETIX covering ongoing maintenance and small upgrades to his 2000 Land Rover Discovery 2, nicknamed Penny. The entries cover a battery cable fix, a replacement center console, and plans for a front bumper and roof rack, alongside discussion with other forum members about trail gear.

Parts used

Parts named as used in the original write-up, grouped the way the Parts page groups them. Where one of the shops we index lists the same thing for this car, it is shown underneath with a link to the shop.

How it was done

Rust quote and repaint plans

The owner got a quote to fix rust around the alpine windows and repaint the hood and roof, but the cost was far more than the vehicle's purchase price, so he is looking into alternatives rather than proceeding.

Battery cable repair

The positive battery cable clamp had been loose and cracked since day one, causing a parasitic drain that required jump-starting if the truck sat more than two weeks. The battery eventually died completely. The owner fitted an Atlantic British clamp repair kit, calling it easy to install, and installed a new battery.

Center console swap

Frustrated that all four tabs on the original center console had snapped, causing window switches to push through, the owner sourced a used replacement console on eBay with intact tabs and better condition. He also fitted a Golden Rovers aluminium switch plate while the console was apart. He lost the shifter boot sleeve (temporarily taped) and the parking brake lever became stuck during the job.

Planned next steps

The owner states his next jobs are installing a Safari Gard front bumper and a roof rack, and eventually addressing a stuck parking brake lever via a CDL cable swap.

A summary in our own words. The full account, with all its detail, is in the original write-up: read it at 2000 Discovery 2 Kinversand "Build" and Adventure Thread ↗
