A 1974 Datsun 260Z built up with suspension, brakes, and interior upgrades

Rob L bought a clean, rust-free 1974 California-import 260Z in Ontario and has spent several seasons modernising it, starting with suspension, brakes, wheels and interior, and later moving on to a drivetrain and front-end overhaul. The thread tracks his parts purchases and installs season by season, including a change of plan from a turbo to a naturally aspirated triple-carb engine build.

How it was done

Starting condition

Rob L bought a 1974 260Z from a used car dealer near Ottawa in 2013. The car had been a California import, ran well and was rust-free, though it needed no body work immediately. He spent the first winter sourcing parts.

Suspension, brakes and wheels

In spring 2014 he tore out the old suspension and control arms, fitting Techno Toy Tuning coilovers and arms, DP Racing camber plates, and a Wilwood six/four-piston brake kit. CCW Classics wheels went on after fender rolling to clear the new tyres, and the car was driven through summer 2014.

Interior work

Over winter 2014/15 Rob ordered Bride Vios III seats with rails, an Autopower roll bar and Sabelt harnesses, plus a Nardi wheel and diamond plate floor plates, all installed in spring 2015 while keeping stock belts for street use.

Drivetrain plans and engine parts

Rob collected engine parts toward an eventual L28ET turbo swap, including a built head, Sensa Pari intake, and a turbo manifold and wastegate kit, before deciding in 2016 to switch to a naturally aspirated build with a Kameari header, triple Solex 44 carburettors and an SK intake, alongside a rebuilt stroker plan.

Rear end and front end updates

He sourced an R200 longnose differential (later referred to as R192) and an FS5W71B 5-speed gearbox for a full rear drivetrain refresh, and in 2016-2017 fitted a Star Road grille, bumper and bumper deletes to the front end, requiring custom bracket modifications.

Progress so far

As of the last updates, the Star Road front-end kit was installed and being fine-tuned, and Rob was about to begin the engine build itself, though the thread's photo hosting failed before further progress could be documented.

Worth knowing

  • Check fusible links early when chasing electrical faults, since they can burn out and cause wider issues
  • A front bumper and grille kit considered a direct bolt-in for 240Z required extensive custom bracket work on a 1974 260Z
