Forum member Voucher Boy is restoring his 1965 Daimler V8 250 in a part-time, home-garage build, documenting sill and valance fabrication, rear subframe and axle refitting, and hub and brake assembly. The thread is a useful read for the fabrication tricks (spring compression rig, splined hub conversion questions) and the honest pace of a spare-time restoration.

How it was done
Body repairs
Voucher Boy fabricated and welded in the near-side inner sill, part of the outer sill, a rear jacking point, and the rear wheel tub/valance/tonneau area, much of which was missing and had to be made up without a reference panel. He also fabricated and fitted a cut-down rear wheel arch spat, a compromise between the original full spat and a spat-less racing style.
Mechanical work
With the shell back on its wheels, he fitted the rear subframe and rear axle, leaving off non-essential subframe fittings until later to protect the fresh underseal and paint during handling. He terminated the fuel line into the boot using compromise unions, then began assembling brake discs and hubs, converting the front hubs from 5-stud to splined type with new bearings and oil seals, and raised questions about rear hub key orientation and sealing the outer front bearing.
Progress so far
As of the most recent updates the car has its subframe, axle, hubs and wheels going on, making it look like a car again, though exhaust apertures in the rear valance and other subframe fittings are still outstanding.
A summary in our own words. The full account, with all its detail, is in the original write-up: read it at 1965 Daimler V8 250 Restoration (Jaguar Forums) ↗
Worth knowing
- Buying small gas canisters from a general retailer is an expensive way to top up welding gas, better to plan supply ahead of time
- A simple angle-iron and bolt rig can safely compress coil springs for subframe assembly
