How it was done

Completed restoration

The builder announced the 1966 Mustang restoration as complete and shared photos of the finished car, which was up north in Pennsylvania at the time and being taken for an alignment.

Engine and drivetrain build

The car runs a 408W stroker built from a used 351W block, with a forged internally balanced rotating assembly, AFR 205 heads, a custom Flow Tech Induction camshaft, Edelbrock Victor Jr intake, and a Pro Systems 860 carburetor. Power goes through a C6 automatic with a custom stall converter to a Ford 9 inch rear with 3:55 gears.

Hood and clearance fix

To fit the larger engine under the hood, a scoop sourced from a 1979 Mustang was installed. It is functional in that it is open rather than sealed, though not a true ducted ram-air setup.

Wheels, tyres and ongoing fitment

16x7 front and 16x8 rear wheels were chosen as the smallest size that cleared the brake rotors, fitted with BF Goodrich g-Force Super Sport A/S tyres. The owner reported slight rubbing on the rear tyres and was trying stiffer springs to address it.

Worth knowing

  • Rear tyres can rub when wheel size and spring stiffness aren't matched, prompting a switch to stiffer springs
