Ray's 1971 Ford Capri 1600L Mk1 "Electric Blue" restoration

Ray bought this Capri new from a Dartford Ford dealer in 1971, choosing Rostyle wheels and a vinyl roof over the pricier XL. After family use into the 1980s it was laid up in 1986 and only brought back out in 2018 for a full restoration, with the DVLA later agreeing to restore its original registration.

How it was done

Original purchase

Ray bought the car on 25 October 1971 from KT Motors, a Ford main dealer in Dartford, Kent, for £1070. He chose Rostyle wheels and a vinyl roof instead of buying the more expensive 1600XL, and the family settled on Electric Blue paintwork, which suited the black vinyl roof.

Family use and storage

Ray's daughter drove the car in the 1980s, during which time the registration was changed to 987 TKR. The car was then put into storage in 1986, with 35,865 miles recorded, and remained there until August 2018.

Restoration and today

Since being taken out of storage in 2018 the car has undergone a full restoration. The DVLA agreed to let the car revert to its original registration, BKJ478K.
