Andy's Auto Body is stripping and rebuilding a facelift Capri Mk1 3000GT built at Halewood in 1973, fitted with the optional rallye pack. The car arrived part-stripped with a poor past repaint hiding heavy filler and corrosion, and the write-up documents the discovery of extensive rust and bad repairs beneath, with new panels being sourced to rebuild the shell.

How it was done
Starting condition
The 3000GT arrived partially stripped with its vinyl roof removed. It had clearly been poorly resprayed in the past and was found to be full of filler, with over an inch covering the roof alone, hiding serious underlying problems.
Corrosion revealed
Once remaining trim was removed, the full extent of corrosion and dodgy past repairs became clear, including the usual A-post rot that had never been properly fixed before the wings were replaced in an earlier respray.
Stripping and blasting
After extensive stripping and blasting, almost every panel on the shell was found to have rust holes somewhere, from the roof to the chassis rails, meaning a large number of replacement panels would be needed.
Dealing with bad repairs
Besides rust, the car had a lot of poor plating and welding to remove. The inner wing top was found to be five layers thick due to two extra plates welded over the originals, which were removed to reveal the still-legible chassis number.
Roof replacement
The roof had a crude plate welded in to replace a previous sunroof, distorting the panel beyond use. Combined with surrounding corrosion, this meant the only option was fitting a full new roof skin, reclaimed from another Mk1 Capri, after removing the damaged outer skin.
