How it was done
Starting condition
The Range Rover is a 1987 Italian-spec Classic originally fitted with the VM 2.4 diesel. The owner decided to replace this with a rebuilt 200Tdi engine sourced from a Defender.
Engine machine work
The 200Tdi block was hot tanked, decked and checked, with bores found in spec and honed. Turner Engineering supplied rings, bearings, a flowed head and head bolts. Aluminium parts were bead blasted and refinished, and fasteners were cadmium plated to restore an original look.
Turbo and intake upgrades
An Allisport VNT turbo and a larger intercooler were fitted, along with a custom-built radiator. The factory intake manifold was modified by removing a restrictive stepped section to improve airflow for the upgraded turbo.
Ancillary conversions
The builder converted the engine to run air conditioning on the passenger side, as used on factory 200Tdi-equipped Range Rovers and Discoverys, fabricating an adapter plate and new tensioner arrangement. A custom spacer and EGT probe were also fitted near the turbo.
Assembly and progress
The cylinder head, exhaust manifold, turbo and flywheel housing have all been fitted during reassembly. As of the most recent update the finished engine is ready to be installed into the vehicle.
A summary in our own words. The full account, with all its detail, is in the original write-up: read it at RRC 200Tdi Build and Swap (RangeRovers.net) ↗
Worth knowing
- Check the O-ring inside the skew drive since a hardened or failed one can cause loss of oil pressure.
- Replace the valve stem caps with harder-material replacements rather than reusing original ones.
